He grew to manhood on the family homestead, and after attending the public schools during boyhood he entered Grove City College, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, in 1892, and continued his studies for three years. He expected to graduate, but owing to the death of his father he was obliged to return home and take charge of the farm and family, being the administrator of his father's estate.
