He was born on the family farm in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, where he worked until 1869, when he learned the trade of a saddler in Fairfield, at which he worked until the spring of 1885, when he rented the farm of Robert R. Blythe, where he then resided.
He and his wife were members of the Lutheran Church. In politics he was a Republican.
