He graduated at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1856, studied theology at Xenia, Ohio; was called, accepted, and took charge in 1859 of the Eighth United Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, of which he was still pastor as late as 1893.

He was a minister of the United Presbyterian Church and for many years was secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions.
