General Notes: Husband - John Purviance

He was a soldier in the revolu-tionary war, serving as a private in Captain William Findley's company, Eighth Battalion, Cumberland county militia (March, 1778). After the revolution he went to Little Washington, Pennsylvania, as a surveyor. In 1817 he purchased a farm from Thomas Waller, consisting of four hundred acres, which he surveyed and laid out in town lots, fifty feet wide by two hundred deep. He named the town Claysville, and advertised the lots for sale in the Washington Reporter, April 21, 1817. The old Wheeling road was laid out and opened through it. About the year 1800 he opened a tavern in a large two-story log house (having three rooms on the lower floor and four in the upper story), which stood on the site of the hotel later occupied by Thomas Bell, and conducted this until 1808.
