He was a large land owner, possessing several entire sections [in Washington County, Pennsylvania?]. The burden of paying taxes, however, was so great, that he traded one section of land for one ewe lamb, and it is thought probable that this was the first Merino sheep introduced in the county, the beginning of an industry that made Washington County one of the greatest sheep growing counties in the United States.
