He was educated in the grammar and high schools of his home town, and graduated from Pennsylvania State College with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1924. He then began studying law in the Law School of the University of Pittsburgh. During the first World War he was a member of the Students' Army Training Corps at Otterbein College under the Reserve Officers' Training Corps.
