He was a successful school teacher, and an officer of the State Militia, retiring as a Brigadier General. He engaged later in farming.

Tradition claims that his ancestor was of French nationality and migrated to Pennsylvania during the French Revolution, and that he arrived penniless, having been robbed of everything on the way across the Atlantic.
