In 1854, when he was a young man of twenty-three years, his father emigrated to America with his children and his sec­ond wife, locating first in Allegheny Town­ship, Butler County, PA, and later moving into Parker Township. The family then di­vided, several removing to Sugar Creek Township, Armstrong County, but Samuel decided to remain in Parker Township, and spent the rest of his life there. For many years he was engaged in the manufacture of pig iron.
