He enjoyed a practical common school education and was an industrious lad from the first, working sturdily on his father’s farm until about the age of twenty-six, when he inherited forty acres and then purchased thirty-seven more. Like all the Morelands, he was a Democrat. He served six terms or more on the school board; was supervisor four terms, and was auditor and collector of taxes of his township. In his religion he was United Presbyterian.
