He and his wife came to Blair County, Pennsylvania, from Bedford, where Michael Barkhimer, a native of Germany, settled on coming to America.
The Barkhimer family were devout members of the old Dunkard church.

He and his wife had a family of thirteen children, of whom eight grew to maturity.

He died at eighty-six years of age.
