He received a common school education at what was known as Barnhart's school in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The first eighteen years of his life were spent on the farm; he then learned the cabinet-making and carpentering trade. For eighteen months he was with Henry Rugh, of Greensburg, who was accidentally killed, and after that Mr. Barnhart followed the trade of carpentering until 1878, when he opened a furniture store on East Pittsburg street, Greensburg, where he remained three years. He then removed a location on Pennsylvania avenue. In 1881 he erected a fine building, and during 1889 he remodeled it, making an elegant threestory structure. He was a republican and with his wife was identified with the First Reformed church of Greensburg.
