He was born in French Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. [HVC 1879, 597]
He was reared in Venango County, Pennsylvania. His education was obtained in the schools of Utica, and at the age of twenty-five he began farming near the center of French Creek township. Politically he was for many years a Democrat, but later was an adherent of the Greenback party. In religion he was a member of the United Presbyterian church. [HVC 1890, 1024]
