He was born in Sewickley, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and there educated in the public schools. He learned the trade of plastering and paper-hanging. At the age of twenty-four years he became a member of Independent Battery G, Heavy Artillery State of Pennsylvania, and served until the close of the war. He and his family were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church
