General Notes: Husband - James Montgomery
He received a meager education in the schools of Brandywine Manor, Pennsylvania, and learned the trade of a harnessmaker. After his marriage he lived for a brief period at Rising Sun, in Lancaster County, but in 1837 he removed to Franklin County, where he bought a small farm in Letterkenny township. This farm he soon afterward exchanged with Christian Bigler for a wayside inn in Upper Strasburg. He disposed of the tavern property in 1844, and after living at Shippensburg for a few months settled at Chambersburg, where he took charge of the "Eagle Hotel," on North Main street, later the "Hotel Montgomery." This property remained in the Montgomery family for half a century. The old hotel was destroyed by the Confederates in 1864.
