He and his brother, James S., were contractors on the Pennsylvania canal, and subsequently partners in the great Sligo Iron Works, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, firm of Barnett, Shorb & Co.

In the War of 1812, he was in service on the Niagara frontier.
He represented Montgomery County, Ohio, two terms in the Senate of that state.
