He was graduated from Washington & Jefferson college in 1885 and from the United Presbyterian Theological seminary at Allegheny, Pennsylvania, in 1891. Beginning January 1st, 1898, he was pastor of the Second United Presbyterian church of Indiana, Pennsylvania.

He was an assistant U. P. minister in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
