He was born in Delaware, and in early life came to Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where he purchased a grist mill at Diebertsville, which place soon changed its name to Stanton's Mills. He followed the milling business until his death. He was a member of the Dunkard or German Baptist church, a strong republican and a very thorough-going and popular business man. He was liberal in his contributions to the church and all worthy enterprises.
He had thirteen children, of whom eight sons and four daughters were living in 1890.
