General Notes: Husband - Reuben B. Bare
He was born on a farm in Newberry Township, York County, Pennsylvania. About 1855 or 1856, he went to Illinois and when the Civil War broke out in 1861, he enlisted in the Fourth Illinois Cavalry, Company D. He participated in the battles of Fort Henry, Fort Hyman, Fort Donaldson, Shiloh, Bethel, Corinth, Iuka and Coffeeville. Soon after the last named battle he was mustered out of the service, and transferred to the Military Railway service and then followed Sherman to the sea. After the war was over he moved to Texas, where he then resided and was a railroad man. Among the railroads in which he played a prominent part were the following: First, he was Master Mechanic and Purchasing Agent of the T. & N. O. Railroad, and after the re-organization of that railroad was General Superintendent of Construction; afterward Superintendent of Operating Department. Second, he was President of the Trinity and Sabine Railroad. Third, he was Vice President and Manager of the G. H. & H. Railroad. Fourth, he was receiver of the Galveston Street Railway Company, and afterward President and General Manager of the same until the property was sold to Mr. Stone, of Boston. After an active and strenuous life of more than forty-five years, he retired to private life and to managing his own personal affairs. His home was then in Houston, Texas.
