He lived in Fishing Creek Valley, York County, Pennsylvania, a few miles from his father's home until 1865. He then moved to Hummelstown, Dauphin County. He was a photographer and a member of the Lutheran Church. He had the deed for the old cemetery in Newberry Township, York County.
