He was a lawyer practicing in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, but residing in Philadelphia; Member of Congress, 1811-1813. He abandoned the law and entered the ministry of the Episcopal Church; was Doctor of Divinity and rector of St. George's, New York, 1816-1844.
