Both he and his wife were descended from some of the earliest and most prominent of Virginia families, being related to Washington and Lee families, through the Lewis family of Virginia. He was engaged in the tobacco business at Richmond, Virginia, and during the Civil War served in the Otey Battery of the Army of Northern Virginia.
