He was reared on the home farm, and educated in the common schools of the neighborhood.

He attended the common schools of the township and early in life engaged in farming. He resided on a farm of 121¼ acres in Robinson Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on which he had one producing gas well.
He was a stockholder in the Midway National Bank and the McDonald Savings Trust Company, and in politics was identified with the Democratic party. He served at least two terms as road supervisor of Robinson Township.
