The emigrant ancestor of this family was born in Scotland. Upon landing in the United States he journeyed by team through the forests to Amboy, New York, from there to Jamestown, New York, finally coming to Sugar Grove, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he settled on a farm. He was a Whig in politics, and he and his wife were members of the New Light sect in religion, later joining the United Brethren church.
