near Enon Valley, Lawrence Co, PA
He farmed and resided on a farm all his life. In the early part of his life he attended the public schools and assisted his father on the farm, later attending different institutions of learning so he could prepare for educational work. He attended for some time the Hayesville academy at Hayesville, Ohio, and also attended for a short time Mount Vernon college at Mount Vernon, Ohio, the Poughkeepsie commercial school, known as Eastman college, and some other schools. He began teaching in the public schools of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in 1867, and continued to teach for many consecutive terms. He was elected county superintendent in 1896 for a term of three years and was re-elected, closing his school duties in 1902. He then continued farm work on his farm, the old homestead formerly owned by his father. In addition to farm work he engaged for a number of years in life insurance business. He eventually retired from farm work and gave the care of the farm over to his son, John Q. Stewart.
