He received his educational training in the schools of Sharpsville, PA. When he was but a lad of fourteen he became a water carrier for the Sharpsville Railroad Company, later for five or six years served respectively as a brakeman and conductor, and in 1903 was appointed the yard master. He served as a member of the council for three years, was a member and past master of Sharpsville Lodge No. 517, F. & A. M., a member of Norman Chapter No. 224, R. A. M., Sharon; of Rebecca Commandery No. 50, K. T., Sharon; Lodge of Perfection, New Castle, PA, and Pennsylvania Consistory, Pittsburg.
