General Notes: Husband - John J. Barnes

He was brought up at the home of his parents and obtained such education as the schools of that day afforded. For two years he worked as a tailor, and then engaged in farming on their own property, making their home there in July, 1847. He served as constable two years in Mercer County, five years for French Creek township, and four years as justice of the peace in Mineral after its formation. In 1874 he became blind, but recovered the sight of one eye ten years later. He died after a long and painful illness.
In politics Mr. Barnes was a Democrat. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church.
He was the father of twelve children (ten sons and two daughters), four of whom died in infancy.

He and his wife are believed to have lived first on the "Barker" place on the Sandy Lake-Polk Road just west of the Mercer-Venango county line, but there is a rumor that when they were first married they lived in Mercer where he had a tailor shop.
Eliza Jane, as she told this story to her grandchildren, had very long hair - it reached the floor. For some reason she had this long hair cut and was offered five dollars for it, but she refused the offer and kept the hair. When they moved across the county line into Venango County in July, 1847, somehow the hair was forgotten and when they went back to get it, it had been stolen, and it was never heard of again.
They lived on this farm the rest of their married lives. John was a farmer but he also did tailoring, making as well as cutting out coats, pants, etc. He served as constable in Mercer County for two years and for five years in Frenchcreek Township, Venango County, and in Mineral Township after its formation. He was a Democrat and a member of the United Presbyterian Church. In 1874 he became blind with cataracts; ten years later he had them removed from one eye and regained the sight of that eye.
