He attended the common schools, and completed his education at Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pennsylvania. He read medicine with F. P. Scott, M. D., Monongahela, and one year later entered the Western Pennsylvania Medical College at Pittsburgh, whence he graduated March 27, 1891. Immediately thereafter he located in Monongahela, where he engaged in the practice of his profession.
He was a member of the Junior Order United American Mechanics, and of the Knights of the Golden Eagle. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church.
