He was educated at Harvard University, studied law, and became a prominent member of the Bradford county, Pennsylvania, bar, practicing at Towanda. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Society, Sons of the Revolution, and of the Society of Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

He and his wife were the parents of five children, of whom but two survived.
