He was reared at home until he was eighteen years old, then he was in the South and West for three years and a half, when he returned to Mercer County, and enlisted in the Civil War under Capt. Wood, One Hundred and Forty-fifth Regiment, Company G, Penn­sylvania Volunteers, and served three years. He enlisted as a private, and was gradually promoted to the office of second lieutenant. During his soldier life he spent about six months in the various Southern prisons.
