General Notes: Husband - Josiah J. Mechling
He was born at Youngwood, Pennsylvania, where he spent the greater part of his youth. For some time he was connected with the engineering corps that made the survey for the Pennsylvania railroad through the Allegheny mountains. He then returned to the home farm, where he remained until 1854, at which time he was married. The same year he took up his abode on the home farm, one mile north of the town, his father removing to Greensburg. He remained on the home farm until 1887, when he retired and also removed to Greensburg, spending his remaining days there. He, too, had marked capacity for the control of business affairs and his careful management and keen discernment brought him a high measure of success, so that at his death, he was one of the wealthy men of the county. Moreover, his business affairs were always conducted with the strictest regard for the ethics of business life. He was never known to take advantage of the necessities of his fellowmen in any trade transaction and was always strictly fair and honorable in every dealing. His wealth was largely acquired through the purchase and sale of real estate and he became the owner of much valuable property in Greensburg and Westmoreland County. His political allegiance was given to the Democratic party, and while he exerted considerable influence in its ranks, he always refused office. He was a member of the Lutheran church in which he long held official positions and was the leading factor in the erection of the new house of worship of the Lutheran denomination at Greensburg.
