He was born in Loyalhanna township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, at what was then McQuaid's mill, on the Loyalhanna creek, two miles from Saltsburg. He received his education in the public schools of Greensburg, the military school at Chester, Pennsylvania, and Col. Leland's military school near Sharpsburg. After assisting his father for a short time in the hotel, he began buying stock, which he continued for thirteen years, operating chiefly in Westmoreland County, whence he shipped to Philadelphia.
Politically he adhered to the principles of the Democratic party.
