General Notes: Husband - John L. Zahniser
He was educated in the pioneer log cabin sufficiently to teach nine terms, the first term being conducted in an old dwelling known as the Craig house, in 1836. He later served as county auditor one term, township assessor, auditor, school director twenty-nine years, and was thirty years a justice of the peace. His estimable wife was a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Jackson Township Live Stock Insurance Company, and was a Democrat. [HMC 1888, 1019]
He managed to secure sufficient education to teach school, which he did for nine terms, after which he located on a farm in Jackson Township, Mercer County, PA, where he spent the remainder of his life. From early life he took an active interest in everything relating to the welfare of the community. For thirty-two years he was a school director and his interest in the cause of education was constantly in evidence. In politics he was a Democrat. He served one year as county auditor and filled various township offices including a service of thirty years as justice of the peace. He was a man of giant stature, strong character and amiable disposition, who enjoyed the confidence and respect of a wide circle of friends. Like many others of his generation he had a passionate love for the family to which he belonged and he seemed to have no greater joy than in laboring for its welfare.
