He worked on the home farm until 1795. He then came to Washington County, Pennsylvania, settling in Jefferson township
When yet a young man came west with his brother John, locating on a tract of land in Jefferson township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He erected a log house on the farm, and conducted a distillery for many years. He was a Whig in politics, and in religious connection was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Cross Creek.
He had 225 acres of land, the greater portion of it was covered with natural growth. He was one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church in Cross Creek Township and was a strong Democrat and active and useful in the early adjustment of township affairs.
