He was educated in the public schools of Washington County, Pennsylvania, and in the Ohio University, at Athens, Ohio. He subsequently matriculated at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Baltimore, where he was graduated in 1901. For three years he was engaged in general practice at Houstonville, and during that time was physician and surgeon for the Midland and Pittsburg Coal Company. He later took a course at the Polyclinic Post-Graduate School and Jefferson Medical College, at Philadelphia, after which he located in Washington, Pennsylvania, where he confined his practice to diseases of the ear, eye, nose and throat.
The family were members of the Third Presbyterian Church of Washington. Dr. McMurray was a Knight Templar Mason, and was also a member of the Bassett Club of Washington.
