General Notes: Husband - George A. B. Nicely

He was born on the old Anthony Nicely farm, and received his education in local public schools. At the time of his father's death he was but nine years old and the changed conditions inevitably following the sad event obliged him to begin the active work of life at the early age of ten. When a mere boy he assisted his mother in the management of the four hundred acres which had been bequeathed to him by his father's will, Mr. Nicely having left a portion of the farm to each of his children. After remaining on the farm until about 1894, Mr. Nicely purchased of S. H. and R. Baker a forty-five acre tract to which he moved, his mother accompanying him to his new home. In 1905 he disposed of the homestead. Up to that time he had managed the estate in connection with his forty-five acre tract. On this tract he remained until 1917, when he bought the residence of John Ray in Ligonier borough and made it his home. In 1911 he purchased the old Emmanuel Smith farm of one hundred and twenty-three acres, and this estate was then managed by his son-in-law, his son Charles cultivating the forty-five acre tract.
In addition to being a successful agriculturist, Mr. Nicely proved himself an able business man. For two years he was absent from the homestead, being engaged in conducting a general store in Latrobe, situated on the corner of Ligonier and Harrison streets. He also dealt largely in coal lands. He was intensely energetic, and even when practically retired, found it impossible to be inactive. Accordingly he took an interest in weighing coal for his son who owned and operated a coal bank near Ligonier.
The political allegiance of Mr. Nicely was given to the Democratic party, and in community affairs he always declared himself on the side of progress and reform. He was a member of the Presbyterian church of Ligonier, serving as president of the board of trustees, and when the church celebrated its centennial anniversary he assisted in compiling its history. He held at one time the office of superintendent of the Sunday school and while in business in Latrobe was a teacher in the Sunday school of the Reformed church of that place.
