He attended the schools of Shenango and Slippery Rock Townships, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, spent three years in school at Volant and took a business course at the Iron City Commercial College. After this he taught school through that section of the county for seven years. He made many friends during this period and was considered a very successful educator. About 1900 he established a general store at Wurtemburg and developed a business that was a leader in its line in the village.
