He was reared on a farm near Unionville, Center Township, Butler County, PA, and attended the common schools of that township. In politics, he was a Republican. Fraternally, he was a member of the Royal Arcanum. He held membership with United Presbyterian Church.
He grew up on his father's farm and attended the district schools. He remained on the home place until 1898, when he removed to Zelienople. In that year he was elected justice of the peace. He was also engaged in business at that place and handled general insurance, having offices in the First National Bank Building.
