Civil War: he served in Hampton's Battery H, Pennsylvania Artillery. Although he never went to the front, he aided the Union by his service at home, the responsibilities of those remaining with the families of the soldiers being more grave than those borne by their neighbors in the army, although there was no physical danger attached.
