He was a Scotchman, who first located on the Island of Jamaica, where he had a sugar and coffee plantation. He sold his property and came to the United States with the intention of buying land, but his family never heard from him again and it was supposed that he was murdered. In 1815 his wife and family came to Philadelphia, where they resided for some time, com­ing to Butler County about the year 1820.
