He passed his early youth at Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and received his education at Kenyon, afterward attending Washington and Jefferson College. After marriage, settled in Franklin township, Washington County. He was a farmer, and active in public affairs, having been director of the poor of Washington County for several terms.
