He was born in County Antrim, Ireland, and was brought to Beaver County, Pennsylvania, when he was four years of age, the family home being in Hopewell township. He there grew to manhood, became a farmer, and cultivated land near the homestead all of his life. They were members of the United Presbyterian church.
