General Notes: Husband - Hon. Thomas White

He was born in Sussex county, in the south of England, and was brought by his mother, Mrs. Mary White, in 1804, to Philadelphia, where he obtained his education in the public schools of that city and became well versed in the French and Spanish languages. He read law with William Rawle, was admitted to the bar and in 1821 opened an office at Indiana, Pennsylvania. On December 13, 1836, he was appointed, by Gov. Joseph Ritner, as president judge of the Tenth Judicial District, composed of the counties of Armstrong, Cambria, Indiana and Westmoreland. After he left the bench, in 1847, he resumed the practice of law. Judge White took great interest in agriculture, raised some very fine sheep and blooded cattle and was president of the Indiana Agricultural Association from its origin until his death.

He studied law in the office of Wm. Rawle, Esq., in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in 1821, commenced the practice of law at Indiana. He was then aged about twenty-one years, and was very soon in successful practice. He was also agent of Geo. Clymer, who owned a large quantity of land in Indiana County. From 1836 till 1846, he presided over the county with distinguished ability. Early in the rebellion he served as one of the commissioners on what was called the "Penn convention," which met at Washington city. He was of medium size, in manner affable and polite, but dignified. Although reared in the city, he took a decided interest in agriculture. He was one of the main projectors and supporters of the Indiana county Agricultural Society, among the most successful societies of the kind in the state, and was the president of the society from its origin till his death. He devoted considerable time to agricultural pursuits, the raising of sheep, blooded cattle, &c. Most undoubtedly Indiana County was greatly indebted to him for her improved stock and modes of farming.
