He was born in Muddy Creek township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and spent his entire life on the homestead farm, which he and his brother William cultivated in partnership. He was a mem-ber of the Presbyterian church, and politically, an ardent supporter of the Repub-lican party. His sisters, Tirzah and Emeline, also resided on the old homestead, which was purchased by their grandfather early in the nineteenth century.
