He was educated in the Bellevue, Pennsylvania, schools, and lived with his parents until about 1901. For several years he was a traveling salesman. In 1907 he went to Sabot, Goochland County, Virginia, to take charge of a plantation owned by the late Col. W. Horace Rose, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
