He was seven years of age when his parents removed to a farm in Elk township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, but, at the early age of fourteen, he left the paternal roof and started out to make his own way in the world. His time and attention were principally devoted to the oil business, first on Oil creek, and later, in Venango, Warren, McKean and Clarion counties, Pennsylvania, and also in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. In 1882 he located in Elk township, Clarion County, and for a time was engaged in general merchandising in Pitch Pine. He was also appointed postmaster of Haynie in 1887. His political support is always given the men and measures of the Democratic party.
