General Notes: Husband - John McHail
He was born in Bolivar, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and received his education in the schools of his native town. Before he was eight years old he began to "offbear" bricks in the brick plant and later he went to work in the clay mines of James Gardner, where he was employed for four or five years. At the end of that time he returned to the brick-yard of the Reese-Hammond Company, where he worked at moulding bricks, remaining until the completion of his twenty-fourth year. Then it was that the current of his life was diverted into another channel. Being sent to Woodland, Clearfield County, by the Woodland Fire-Brick Company, he was there engaged for two years in moulding bricks, and meanwhile had his attention directed to an industry in which he was destined to find his true sphere of action, the coal industry. For nine years he was alternately employed in the coal and clay mines of Clearfield County, and at the end of that time returned to Bolivar, where he worked for one year in the clay mines of the Bolivar Fire-Brick Company. Upon the expiration of this period Mr. McHail was made superintendent of the coal and clay mines of the Westmoreland Fire-Brick Company at Hunkers Station, Westmoreland County, and this position he retained for one year, returning then to the task of working in the mines as a coal-digger, being employed by the Keystone Coal Company at Madison, Hempfield township. After eleven months of this he went back to Clearfield County, where he spent one year in the mines of the Woodland Fire-Brick Company. For three years thereafter Mr. McHail was engaged in general mercantile business at Woodland, but then decided to return to his old employment and his old home, and for six months worked in the clay mines of the Reese-Hammond Company at Bolivar. His upward progress, however, was rapid and after those few months he found himself in the position of superintendent for the Bolivar Coal and Coke Company and this position he retained until 1915. Following this he held dual office, that of superintendent and foreman for the Ridgeview Coal Company, and his record formed part of the annals of the concern. In the sphere of politics Mr. McHail was faithful to the traditions of his family, adhering to the Democratic party, but with the exception of filling an unexpired term as councilman has never held public office. He affiliated with Clearfield Lodge, No. 305, Knights of Pythias.
