For sixty years he was an honored member of the Cincinnati bar, and for more than half a century before his death secretary, treasurer and mainstay of the Cincinnati College.
He and his brother, William, are known to posterity as the originators of the famous McGuffey series of school books. William was the author of the first four McGuffey Readers, and Alexander H., of the two other readers and one speller.
