He acquired his education in the common schools of his native place, and in the Mount Pleasant College. His time and attention were given entirely to agricultural pursuits from the time of his graduation until 1885, when declining health compelled him to retire from active life. He then removed to Mount Pleasant where he resided during the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

There is a great deal of confusion about dates for this individual. Two different sources give 1834 and 1841 as the year of his birth. Another source gives the year of his death as 1877, at age fifty-seven, giving a year of birth of 1820 (his mother would have been eleven years old at his birth.)
