This name is prominent in English history. The first of the name on record, Roger de Mortimer, was born in Normandy, about the year 1000. He was a relative of William the Conqueror, and a general in his army; he is also on record as the founder of the abbey of St. Victor in Normandy. From him was descended a line of barons of Wigmore, earls of March and earls of Ulster. One of these, Lord Edmund Mortimer, who lived from 1392 to 1434, was claimed to be the rightful heir to the throne of England in the reigns of Henry IV., V. and VI. His father had been declared, by act of parliament, presumptive heir to King Richard II.
In Ameria, in Pennsylvania this name existed in Bedford County at least since 1774. John and James Mortimer were rangers on the frontiers from that county in the revolution, and John Mortimer is recorded as a ranger on the frontiers from York county. Thomas Mortimer was, in the same war, a member of Captain John Steel's company, in the 10th Pennsylvania Regiment of Foot.
