His father was of Scotch-Irish extraction and a native of Scotland, who came to the United States in the early part of the 1800s and settled in New Jersey.

When quite young he left New Jersey, crossed the Alleghenies and settled in Ohio, where he was one of the pioneers of Columbiana County.
